Director of Finance
Job Description
We are hiring a Director of Finance at a private school in the Greater Philadelphia region who will be a key member of the leadership team, responsible for the development, direction and administration of all financial affairs, financial planning, facilities and maintenance resources, human resources, and financial aid. This position reports directly to the President and works closely with the Finance and Campus Planning Committees of the Board. 7+ years’ experience working in an educational or non-profit setting managing finances and planning. Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or related field required. CPA Preferred. Proven success developing, managing and building relationships. Experience with boards is a plus.
Manages and supervises the Finance Department and its staff regarding planning, organization and management (including bank reconciliation, cash management, accounts payable, accounts receivable, purchasing and investing), budgeting, financial reporting, human resources, payroll, food service, contracts for facility rentals, and capital improvement planning.
Establishes policies, procedures, standards and strategies for areas of responsibility and provides adequate internal control capabilities and strengths to safeguard the school’s assets.
Prepares and maintains the annual budget.
Maintains compliance with governmental regulations and changing regulatory environment by staying current on law and regulations that may affect compliance.
Coordinate the management and the investment of all funds in consultation with the President.
Plan with the President, other Directors, and other appropriate groups the future needs in curriculum, facilities, technology, and maintenance as they impact finances
Supervise and evaluate annually the business office operations and personnel
Use standard accounting and bookkeeping procedures appropriate for non-profit educational institutions and to keep an accurate continuous record of the cash and financial position of the school
Ensure the formulation and dissemination of school financial policies and regulations, in particular those for spending, tuition, financial aid, and scholarships
Prepare a monthly operating statement for the President and receive and review monthly financial reports
Provide for the annual review of the school’s financial records and financial position in conjunction with auditors
Oversee all school purchasing, financial investments, banking, payroll, and benefits programs in conjunction with the President.
Monitor and strategically plan for the capital expenditures and infrastructure needs
Represent the school at various regional, state, and national associations relative to business operations
Works with the Director of Institutional Advancement on coordination of gift reporting and gift restrictions, the annual setting of the endowment investment spending policy, communication on the financial performance of all endowment gifts, ensuring all directed gifts are handled to donor’s specific bequests.

I was honored with two special awards in my career — the King’s College Leo Award for Outstanding Achievement in Profession and the Early Stage East, Raymond Rafferty Memorial Award.

First job: Babysitter! I even designed business cards and handed them out to my neighbors. Entrepreneurial even as a pre-teen!
Where did you go to college? King’s College, PA. Second generation Carney to attend. I was the co-chair of the recent annual dinner that raises money for the Presidential Hope Fund which supports current King’s students in need.
If you are relaxing with a cocktail after a long day, what are you enjoying? In the winter, it’s a glass of Tempranillo. In the summer, you’ll find me with a BLL (Bud Light Lime: #PhillyPhilly)
Favorite sports team and why: As a young professional, I met Allen Iverson, Pat Croce and Scott Williams at the 1997 Chamber of Commerce Sixers tip-off luncheon. Been a fan ever since. Of course, I am also a diehard Birds Fan. #PhillySpecial
What do you like to do in your spare time? Getting out on the Schuylkill River Trail for a run or long walk. Laundry; I love doing laundry.

Favorite Books: Sarah’s Key. Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption. I enjoy watching documentaries and learning about history. As the granddaughter of a WWI Army Veteran, understanding the history of our country and what we fight for has become a passion of mine.
